Her Majesty, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, (Queen Azizah) photographed by Louise O'Driscoll

Picture this - you wake up in the morning with no idea you will be meeting with and photographing a monarch. Pretty exciting right? Intense on some levels. Either way, you are bound to have some bias regarding what the experience may be like - questions you could ask meeting a Queen and wondering how you should greet and behave during the engagement.

Well - I found my bias flying out the classroom window when I met with Her Majesty, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah during a research assignment. Queen Azizah, is a monarch whose presence leaves a lasting impression. Her demeanour is strong and powerful, her eyes have that kind of electric sparkle that you just connect with. What struck me most was her choice to deliver a grounded, heartfelt message, addressing real issues affecting women today, from mental health to overall well-being. Where I expected a few words may be exchanged, it was quite the opposite. Here's my truest account of the experience:

First Impressions

From the moment she entered the room, Queen Azizah radiated warmth, humor, and approachability. She greeted everyone personally, creating an open and welcoming atmosphere. During our briefing session, we shared a lighthearted moment about my outfit. When she asked about my journey as a storyteller, it was clear she listened with genuine interest, reflecting deeply on my words rather than offering polite nods. Her expression became serious as I spoke to her about my time in Africa and Asia, noting the issues I felt must be addressed.

Sharing a table as we prepared for our class, she spoke about her travel plans, and shared her reflections on education and collaboration between the UK and Asia. Within minutes, I realised she embodies a modern and compassionate form of leadership. I was struck by the careful thought she gave to selecting meaningful charities and organisations during her UK visit, fitting as many visits as possible into an already busy schedule. Before the session began, she turned her body closely to mine and looked very deeply into my eyes - and she just said "thank you." but as anyone who has been thanked by someone senior in the world will know, there are some thank you's that just mean more than others.

Championing Women

One of the most powerful lessons of the day was her unwavering support for women. Queen Azizah spoke candidly about often-overlooked topics such as mental health, women’s health, and the pressures young girls face today. Her willingness to address these sensitive subjects made her both relatable and inspiring.

Empathy and Presence

Her ability to make every person feel seen reminded me that leadership is a human quest more than a hierarchical one. In a room full of people, she gave her full attention and presence to each individual. She spoke openly about challenges with optimism and vision, showing that true leadership starts with listening and leading with empathy. Working the room with grace, she demonstrated that presence is a powerful form of influence.

Inspiration Through Action

Beyond words, the Queen led by example. She actively participated in activities, encouraged young guides, and shared personal stories about resilience, self-care, and mental well-being. Supporting women’s growth, she showed, is not just a slogan, it is a commitment expressed through authentic action.

Reflections

Meeting Her Majesty left me reflecting on my own path and the kind of leader I aspire to be. She reminded me that leadership is rooted in service, empathy, and advocacy. It means speaking up for others, addressing important issues with honesty, and remaining human.

As I look back at the photographs from that day, I am reminded not only of Queen Azizah’s grace but also of her unwavering commitment to showing up fully and authentically for women and their well-being. Leadership, she exemplifies, can be practiced by anyone willing to listen, connect, and lead with heart.
